Public debt reaches 43 bln euros at end of June

ZAGREB, Sept 28 (Hina) - Croatia's public debt, which comprises the internal and external debt of the central government, non-budget beneficiaries and local government, totalled HRK 172.05 billion at the end of June 2012, HRK 16.08 billion more than at the end of 2011, of which HRK 9.2 billion was incurred with the take-over of the shipyards' debts, the Finance Ministry said on Friday.

The public debt's share in gross domestic product grew from 46.7 per cent at the end of last year to 50.5% at the end of June.

The central government accounts for the bulk of the public debt. Its debt reached HRK 162.1 billion at the end of June, about 11% more than at the end of 2011, with the internal debt amounting to HRK 102.9 billion and the external debt to HRK 59.2 billion.

The debt of non-budget beneficiaries exceeded HRK 8 billion at the end of this past June, going up by HRK 152 million from the end of 2011.

The local government's debt declined by HRK 127.1 million to HRK 1.9 billion at the end of June.

Sovereign guarantees were reduced by HRK 7.5 billion in the first six months of this year. The government's potential debt through sovereign guarantees exceeded HRK 39 billion at the end of June, down 16.1% from the end of 2011. The share of sovereign guarantees in GDP dropped from 13.9% at the end of last year to 11.5% at the end of June 2012.

The debt of the Croatian Bank for Reconstruction and Development at the end of June was HRK 17.5 billion, up HRK 4.2 billion from the end of December. Its share in the GDP grew by 1.1 percentage points to 5.1%.
