Slovenian ambassador expects Croatia's EU treaty to be ratified by year's end

GOSPIC, Sept 21 (Hina) - Slovenian Ambassador Vojko Volk said on Friday he expected it would be possible to ratify Croatia's Accession Treaty with the European Union in the Slovenian parliament by year's end.

That depends on the Ljubljanska Banka issue and the financial experts entrusted with finding a solution have been instructed to do so as soon as possible, Volk told Hina in Gospic.

"We all want this ugly Ljubljanska Banka story, which has been going on for 20 years, to come to a happy ending as soon as possible," he said, adding that for him, a happy ending meant that the bank could start operating, paying its debts as well as collecting its claims.

Volk said the financial experts need not find a solution to the Ljubljanska Banka issue but reach an agreement on solving the issue of power of attorney which the Croatian state gave to Privredna Banka Zagreb and Zagrebacka Banka. "We have nothing against those banks suing Ljubljanska Banka but the key problem are those powers of attorney."

Asked if that meant that Slovenia made the ratification of the Accession Treaty conditional on the suspension of the power of attorney Croatia gave those two banks, Volk said Slovenia wanted to know "if we will negotiate or go to court."

"We are not suing anyone and the Croatian state is suing us through those powers which makes this an inter-state problem. The solution is to either suspend or freeze or cancel those powers or remove them in any other way," said the ambassador.
