Bosnia, Serbia, Montenegro stepping up police cooperation

SARAJEVO, Sept 12 (Hina) - Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, Montenegrin Interior Minister Ivan Brajovic and Bosnian Security Minister Sadik Ahmetovic agreed in Sarajevo on Wednesday it was necessary to intensify the cooperation between their countries' police forces and security agencies.

"Without the cooperation of the countries in the region, we can't fight organised crime," Ahmetovic told the press after a working meeting of the three ministers.

He said criminal groups in the region were well-connected and that security agencies must get better organised.

Dacic said police cooperation had been progressing for years and that this was very important for fighting organised crime and terrorism.

"The relations between the police forces are much better than the relations of political leaderships," he said, noting that Croatia cooperated on this front.

Dacic said the arrest of 25 members of organised crime by the Bosnian police earlier today was concrete proof of the existing cooperation.

Ahmetovic confirmed that Naser Keljmendi was suspected as the leader of one of the organised crime gangs and that police were looking for him. He said his escape was possible because such criminals had ties with people in government and politics.

Brajovic said Keljmendi was not in Montenegro as speculated by the media. He applauded the Bosnian police operation, voicing willingness to cooperate.

"Without a regional approach, there is no real fight against crime," he said.

Brajovic went on to say that Croatia's forthcoming accession to the European Union brought new responsibilities to the countries in Southeast Europe because of the protection of the Union's external border.

Serbia, Bosnia and Montenegro will set up a regional centre for fighting crossborder crime to be based in Trebinje and an agreement on cooperation in fighting crime will be signed, it was announced.
