Kosovo parliament adopts amendments ending independence supervision

PRISTINA, Sept 7 (Hina) - Kosovo's parliament on Friday ratified an agreement with the European Union extending the mandate of the EULEX (EU Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo) until June 2014 and adopted 22 constitutional amendments ending the international supervision of Kosovo's independence.

Ninety-eight deputies voted for the amendments, ten were against and two abstained.

The opposition Self-Determination Movement objected to the continuation of the EULEX mandate.

The end of international supervision was also announced by the International Management Group, which comprises the United States, the EU countries that have recognised Kosovo, and Turkey.

The extension of the EULEX mandate is the result of several agreements which the Kosovo government and President Atifete Jahjaga reached with Brussels.

The International Management Group will announce the end of the supervision next week.

The EU's special representative to Kosovo and head of the EU's office in Pristina, Samuel Zbogar, welcomed the parliament's decision to extend the EULEX mandate.

Strengthening the rule of law remains a priority, and our common goal and today's decision will help to achieve it faster, he said, adding that the strong support to the decision in parliament confirmed that Kosovo was committed to a European future.

Also today, Kosovo's parliament adopted a resolution that in the future the country will use Albania's international access code 355 instead of Serbia's 381, saying this is due to the fact that Kosovo is not a member of the International Telecommunication Union and cannot have its own code.

This move will greatly benefit the citizens of Kosovo on the political, economic and security fronts, it was said.
