Croatia's exports stagnate in Jan-July, imports grow

ZAGREB, Aug 31 (Hina) - Croatia's export of commodities in this year's first seven months declined 0.1% on the year when expressed in the national currency and 1.9% in euros, while imports went up 1.6% in kuna and declined 0.2% in euros, the State Bureau of Statistics said on Friday, adding that the export-import ratio was 56.8%.

Exports in January-July 2012 amounted to HRK 40.9 billion, while imports exceeded HRK 72 billion.

The foreign trade deficit was HRK 31.1 billion, up 3.9% on the year.

Expressed in euros, exports were 5.4 billion, while imports were 9.5 billion. The trade deficit was EUR 4.1 billion, up 2.1% from the first seven months of 2011.

In July alone, exports went up 3.8% to EUR 842.7 million, while imports went up 1.6% to EUR 1.5 billion. The trade deficit was EUR 667.9 million, down about one per cent from July 2011.

Croatia's most important trade partner is the EU, where it exported EUR 3.1 billion worth of goods in the first seven months of 2012, down 6.4% on the year, while importing over EUR 6 billion, up 3.9%.

Among the EU countries, Croatia's main trade partners are Italy and Germany. Exports to Italy dropped 18.5% to EUR 805 million, while imports grew 9.6% to EUR 1.7 billion. Exports to Germany went up 2.4% to EUR 588.3 million, while imports grew 4% to EUR 1.2 billion.
