Agriculture ministry drawing up regulation on export, import duties

ORAHOVICA, Aug 25 (Hina) - The Agriculture Ministry will propose to the government the adoption of a regulation on export and import duties in an attempt to stabilise the situation in case of a lack of food in livestock production and to cushion a possible hike in food prices, Minister Tihomir Jakovina said on Saturday visiting the Orahovica agribusiness.

He said commodity reserves were not in the remit of his ministry and that they could not be put on the market in a short time, as requested by "some critics."

Commenting on the impossibility of compensating farmers whose crops have been hit by this year's drought, Jakovina said the government very responsibly outlined the measures with which it could help and that it was important to define a good system for the period ahead, including insurance.

He said talks with insurance companies would begin next week and that the government wanted to find a solution on the model of most European countries.

The minister visited the 900-hectare Grudnjak fish-farm in which the Orahovica agribusiness invested HRK 25 million over the last two years and in which it plans to invest another HRK 5 million in 2013.

The farm exports 80 per cent of its fish to the European Union and next year will embark on the construction of a fish plant, said Orahovica CEO Darko Dukaric.
