Parliament speaker goes to U.S. for myeloma treatment

ZAGREB, Aug 23 (Hina) - Croatian Parliament Speaker Boris Sprem on Thursday departed for the United States aboard a regular plane for the further treatment of multiple myeloma, a cancer of plasma cells, his office said, adding that the possibilities of treatment in Croatia, which has led to some improvement, have been exhausted.

According to Sprem's team of doctors, further treatment envisages autologous stem cell transplantation with the previous reduction of tumour cells. This treatment cannot be performed in Croatia, so they recommended treatment at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

At the team's proposal, the Croatian Health Insurance Institute has approved the treatment and its cost in the US, which is customary for the type and stage of the disease, Sprem's office said.

Substituting for Sprem is Deputy Parliament speaker Josip Leko based on a decision Sprem made on June 26.
