German cemetery being arranged in Sisak

SISAK, Aug 22 (Hina) - Six stone crosses were placed at Sisak's city cemetery on Wednesday, where an ossuary is being arranged and a monument erected to World War II German soldiers buried there, and a plaque with the names of all German soldiers killed in the wider Sisak area will be placed by mid-September.

According to the city archives, 537 German soldiers were buried at the Sisak cemetery in the war years, while German data show that about 650 soldiers were killed in the area. After the war, all remains were transferred to a joint ossuary.

Only last year, at the initiative of some of their descendants, the German national alliance for war graves maintenance and Sisak officials agreed on a German section at the Sisak city cemetery. The project is financed by the alliance. Sisak will join Zagreb, Pula and Split as one of the few cities with a German cemetery.

According to German documents, 20,116 German WW2 soldiers were buried at nearly 1,000 known locations in Croatia. The national alliance will arrange only a few cemeteries, transferring the remains from single locations.
