Eurostat observers to monitor Bosnia's population census

SARAJEVO, July 2 (Hina) - Eurostat director Peter Everaers said in Sarajevo on Monday that European Union bodies would help organise the population census in Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as supervise its holding.

The first Bosnian census in more than 20 years should be held next spring and Everaers said the EU was interested in its success, so it was willing to extend all the necessary assistance.

Our goal is to make sure that international standards are respected, he said after talks on preparations for local elections with Finance Minister Nikola Spiric and representatives of state bodies and agencies in charge of the census.

Six or seven Eurostat experts will work in Bosnia in the months ahead on preparations for a trial census to be held in October.

Next spring's census will be monitored by 40-60 observers.

Everaers said that questions to be asked in the census had not been agreed yet. He recalled that ethnicity, language and faith were very delicate subjects in Bosnia, so questions about them should be approached carefully.

The population census had been postponed for years because the state parliament could not agree if citizens should answer questions about ethnicity or faith.

Under a population census law passed early this year, respondents can choose whether to answer those questions.
