Imports drop

ZAGREB, July 1 (Hina) - Croatia posted a 1.5 per cent year-on-year decline in exports expressed in the national currency in the first five months of 2012, or 3.5 per cent when expressed in euros, while imports, expressed in kunas, went up 1.7 per cent and, expressed in euros, 0.3 per cent, the Croatian Bureau of Statistics said on Friday.

The export-import ratio was 56.1 per cent.

Exports in January-May 2012 amounted to HRK 28.3 billion, while imports were HRK 50.4 billion.

The trade deficit was HRK 22.1 billion, up six per cent on the year.

Expressed in euros, which gained two per cent on the kuna in the first five months on the year, were EUR 3.76 billion, while imports were EUR 6.7 billion.

The trade deficit was slightly over EUR 2.9 billion, up four per cent from the first five months of 2011.

Croatia's main trade partner is the European Union, where it exported EUR 2.2 billion worth of goods, down 7.5 per cent on the year, while imports went up 6.7 per cent to EUR 4.3 billion.

Italy and Germany are Croatia's most important trade partners. Exports to Italy dropped 16.4 per cent to EUR 581 million in the first five months of the year, while imports went up 16.2 per cent to EUR 1.2 billion.

Croatia's exports to Germany went up 2.1 per cent to EUR 411 million, while imports went up 1.1 per cent to EUR 837 million.
