Int'l economy conference begins in Dubrovnik

DUBROVNIK, June 28 (Hina) - The Croatian National Bank's (HNB) 18th annual international economic conference in Dubrovnik opened on Thursday.

Responding to questions from the press about developments in the eurozone and their impact on Croatia, HNB deputy governor Boris Vujcic said they were very important because the eurozone was Croatia's main trade partner and most capital flows involved the eurozone.

The eurozone is facing tough decisions these days that will define the path it will take, he said.

According to Vujcic, the eurozone should gradually go for some form of fiscal union, which is not easy, as this is a political issue and a decision needs to be made in a short time, which represents a significant political problem right now.

At the conference, foreign and domestic academics and architects of the economic and monetary policy will discuss the causes and impact of the current global and European crisis.

The event brought together representatives of the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the European Central Bank, the European Investment Bank, the Bank for International Settlements, the European Commission, a number of central and commercial banks, and academics from several US, European and Croatian universities.

Special attention will be paid to global imbalances, banking crises, fiscal adjustments, problems in the eurozone and their impact on central and east European economies.
