Cardinal says new legislation to affect foundations of human existence

ZAGREB, June 25 (Hina) - During his sermon at a special mass for the homeland on the occasion of Croatia's Statehood Day on Monday, Zagreb Archbishop Josip Bozanic criticised those who proposed the new legislation concerning "the secret of life" and concerning the family.

He said that being a citizen and believer in Croatia he could not be indifferent to laws which he said infringe on the foundations of the human existence and he called on the state authorities to protect all its citizens through the legislation.

In reference to the government-sponsored bill on medically assisted human reproduction and on announcements abut possible changes of the family legislation, the dignitary said "What guides those who prepare and pass laws? Do those representatives of people take into consideration that each law impacts the society?"

In attendance at the mass held in St, Mark's Church were top state officials, including President Ivo Josipovic and Parliament Deputy Speaker Josip Leko.

"If we leave God, the pillar and hope of our life, no wonder that feelings of abandonment, despondency, violence may be prevailing in Croatia," the cardinal said criticising "the strange interpretations" of the gift of life and family values.

The Roman Catholic dignitary called for the respect for justice and equity adding that it was painful to see people who work but are not paid for their work, those who lose their jobs and young job-seekers who cannot find jobs.

Criticising the present-day media he said that the media turned into a mouthpiece of proponents of the idea that there is no absolute truth.
