20 years of Croatia's UNESCO membership marked

ZAGREB/PARIS, June 22 (Hina) - The 20th anniversary of Croatia's membership of UNESCO was marked at its seat in Paris on Thursday night with a concert by the Lado Ensemble and the Klapa Jelsa vocal group.

Deputy Culture Minister Berislav Sipus said UNESCO membership was very important to Croatia and that he hoped it was the other way around as well given Croatia's activity.

He said Croatia was close to the top of UNESCO's lists according to the quantity of tangible and intangible heritage.

He said a decision would be made in the next few days on the inclusion of the complex in Zadar's Forum on the UNESCO list and that tonight's concert was the best way to lobby for Croatia's interests.

Asked by Hina about the stage of the candidacy for the inclusion of traditional klapa singing on UNESCO's intangible heritage list, Sipus said it was at a very high stage.

Speaking of Croatia's greatest achievements in the 20 years of UNESCO membership, he mentioned the quantity of tangible and intangible heritage included on the heritage lists, and said it was important for the nation to start appreciating what Croatian restorers and preservationists had done on buildings damaged in the 1991-95 war.
