Croatia marks World Refugee Day

ZAGREB, June 20 (Hina) - World Refugee Day, June 20, was observed in Zagreb on Wednesday with a series of events organised by the Interior Ministry in cooperation with the Croatian Red Cross, the UNHCR, the Centre for Peace Studies, and the Jesuit Refugee Service.

About 21 million refugees seek asylum every year, it was said.

Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic said that although World Refugee Day was being observed today, his ministry dealt with the problem every day, trying to contribute to the protection of people who were forced to leave their countries and seek help in other ones.

Ostojic said the ministry was observing this day with nongovernmental organisations and that cooperation with them was an example of successful cooperation with civil society organisations.

Since 2007, Croatia has granted 58 of 357 asylum requests, (16%), which is in keeping with European Union standards, the minister said.

He noted that the number of asylum seekers went up over the past year, saying they left Croatia even before a first-instance decision, which indicates that Croatia was not their target destination.

Despite the number increase, reception, accommodation and decision-making are at a high level, Ostojic said, adding that Croatia was now giving back the good it had received when it was most needed.
