Sixth conference on food safety opens

OPATIJA, May 22 (Hina) - By joining the European Union, Croatia will enter a new, big market whose challenges it will be able to meet only with high quality food and high productivity, Agriculture Minister Tihomir Jakovina said in Opatija on Tuesday, opening the 6th conference on food safety and quality in Croatia.

Speaking of food safety, Jakovina said control of food production processes and food management must not be omitted, adding that laboratories were given higher international standards which would soon be in force in Croatia too.

The minister underlined the importance of protecting autochthonous farming products.

He said Croatia would have to align its food safety and quality regulations to EU regulations and that a further step forward had to be made in food control.

Assistant Minister Bozica Rukavina said Croatia had three reference and 23 official laboratories and that 17 official labs were in the process of being authorised. She said there were no laboratories for eight of the 20 reference areas.
