Parliament amends law on SME development

ZAGREB, April 27 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament on Friday passed amendments to the law on the development of small and medium enterprises whereby the government wants to boost SMEs by attracting new investments.

The amendments, defined in accordance with European Commission recommendations, categorise micro-enterprises with up to ten employees, small enterprises with up to 50 and medium enterprises with up to 250 employees, and define micro-projects of up to EUR 1 million, small projects of up to 10 and medium projects of up to 50 million euros.

The amendments also extend the authority of the Croatian Agency for SME to investment promotion and rename it HAMAG INVEST, the Croatian Agency for SME and Investment.

MPs also passed a law on the establishment of the Investment and Competition Agency which is expected to ensure the legal framework for boosting competitiveness by encouraging investments and job creation, sector specialisation and improvement of financial mechanisms.

The bill on public assembly was sent into second reading.

In accordance with the government's position, parliament rejected motions by the Croatian Democratic Union and the Croatian Labour Party to amend the law on the obligations and entitlements of state officials and revoke the president's entitlement to a privileged pension.

MPs adopted the statute of the HANFA financial regulator and two conventions - on the common transit procedure and on the simplification of formalities in trade in goods.

Parliament ratified an agreement between the government and the European Commission on the financing of Croatia's cross-border cooperation with Montenegro, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Parliament will reconvene on Thursday.
