President, economy minister attend Microsoft Windays12 conference

ROVINJ, April 26 (Hina) - Technology offers great possibilities and Croatia must make sure that part of society does not remain on the margin because of not knowing or using technology, President Ivo Josipovic said at the Microsoft Windays12 conference in Rovinj on Thursday.

He highlighted the importance of the 12th such conference, which opened on Monday and closes on Friday, bringing together 1,500 participants, mainly IT experts from Croatia and abroad.

"Determination, responsibility, expectations, education and optimism are important for the development of society," Josipovic said, adding that the government must resolutely achieve the economic reform goals.

"Determination in decision-making means absence of fear of decision-making, and I see fear of decision-making at many levels, notably in politics."

He said there were hundreds of valuable properties in Croatia falling into disrepair and losing in value because decisions on their fate were not being made.

"Let's start deciding. We must resolutely distinguish between a criminal decision and a bad business decision. This means that those who are authorised mustn't be afraid of decision-making," said Josipovic.

Economy Minister Radimir Cacic said one should account for one's moves.

"We are the executive authority. Citizens voted for us to run the country and make decisions. The worst and most dangerous thing that can happen to a country is an executive authority that doesn't make decisions, which happened in Croatia over the past two years."

Cacic said a recent survey of 4,800 small and medium enterprises in G8 countries showed that 21 per cent of gross domestic growth was tied to the Internet economy.
