Josipovic comments on religion class

ZAGREB, April 10 (Hina) - President Ivo Josipovic on Tuesday commented on the statement by the Croatian Bishops' Conference (HBK) that the proposal that religion classes be held in the first or last period was discriminatory, saying he expected, in accordance with equality and justice for all children, all classes to be organised so that every second they spent in school was useful.

"All pupils must be in equal conditions. This means that children who don't attend religion class mustn't hang around the yard and spend time in school without something to do," Josipovic said in response to questions from the press.

The media reported that Education Minister Zeljko Jovanovic recommended that religion classes be held in the first or last period, which elicited an immediate response from the Church. HNB president Marin Srakic sent a letter to Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic saying that such a proposal was discriminatory given that 85 per cent of pupils attended religion class.
