Academy members Andrea Zlatar-Violic, Davor Gjenero and Sinisa Rodin spoke of the rights of ethnic and gender minorities, asylum seekers and foreigners.
Zlatar-Violic, the Minister of Culture, said that discussions should focus on strengthening the rights of all people in Croatian who felt marginalised, as "others".
"Croatia is now a very closed and quite homogenous community which, when faced by the challenge of the global 'other', will probably find and make up its own others and foreigners. Those 'foreigners' will unfortunately become some sort of new enemy," Zlatar-Violic said, stressing the importance of transforming the Croatian society.
Rodin said that Croatia's accession to the European Union would contribute to the liberalisation of social life in many areas, noting that lack of implementation of liberal ideas was the cause of many of the present problems.
