Deputy PM says government going in right direction

PLITVICE, March 31 (Hina) - Deputy Prime Minister Neven Mimica said on Saturday, commenting on the government's first 100 days in office, that it was visible that the government was going in the right direction and that after the three-month warming up, it would become evident that this was indeed a coalition government.

"The expectations were high, which is understandable given all the bad things that were happening in recent years, and it is difficult to accomplish much in 100 days. The budget shows that the government is going in the right direction, as it has reduced public spending for the first time and at the same time, a series of measures have established a balance between budgetary restrictions and incentives to the economy," Mimica said responding to questions from the press at Plitvice.

He said the first results of the government's investment programme would be felt in a few months.

Mimica went on to say that in the past three-month period, Croatia's accession to the European Union was approved at a referendum and that parliament ratified the Accession Treaty, which he said had created the legal framework for Croatia's activity in the EU.

He said a series of systematic laws were about to be sent to parliament, including on artificial insemination, the national broadcaster HRT, conflict of interest, and decentralisation.

Asked how the ruling coalition was functioning and if it would avoid the traps of the 2000 coalition government, Mimica said that everyone who was well-intentioned and analytical saw that the incumbent government worked differently than the 2000 government.

"This coalition's parties are strongly interested in solving problems as a coalition, which will hold the coalition together. Unity is important for every coalition government and not what ministers are doing individually. I think that after the 100-day warm-up, it will become evident that this is indeed a coalition team and a coalition government," he said.
