Medieval Zrinski Mine near Zagreb opened to visitors

ZAGREB, March 31 (Hina) - The Zrinski Mine is reopening its doors to visitors to the Medvednica Nature Park on Saturday and Sunday, the Park announced on Friday.

Visits with a guide are organised between 11 am and 5 pm on weekends. Visits are also possible at other times if arranged with the Park.

The Zrinski is the first medieval mine in Croatia which is open to visitors.

Wood sculptures of miners, accompanied by the sounds of dripping water, picks hitting rock, wood wheelbarrows and miners' muffled talk evoke medieval mining, the park's acting manager, Snjezana Malic-Limarina, said in a press release.

"We have opened the door of the mine to you. Come and learn part of our history," the statement said.

In 1463, King Matijas Korvin authorised Count Petar Zrinski and his offspring to open gold, silver and other mines on their property. This royal privilege enabled the Zrinski family to mine on Medvednica, the mountain overlooking Zagreb.

The Zrinski was a lead-zinc ore mine, also containing galenite and silver.
