Interior minister says war crimes suspect committed suicide

ZAGREB, March 29 (Hina) - An internal police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Igor Beneta has found that the former member of a special police unit committed suicide, Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic told reporters before a government meeting on Thursday.

Beneta was one of the former three special policemen accused of war crimes committed in Grubori village near Knin, where six Serb civilians were killed in the wake of a Croatian military offensive, known as Operation Storm, in the summer of 1995. He was found dead hanging on a tree in a forest in the Zadar area last April.

Police said then that it was suicide. However, there has been growing speculation lately that he was murdered so he would not testify against his comrades in arms and that attempts are being made to cover it up.

Responding to questions from the press, Ostojic said he knew about the information that his predecessor Tomislav Karamarko had received threats from the Serbian mafia. He said that every threat should be assessed and that in this case protection measures would remain in place.

The minister would not say whether the threats were serious. "Don't ask me that, you know I will never tell you that," he said.

Croatian media said on Thursday that Karamarko had received threats from Sreten Jocic, also known as Joca Amsterdman, who is on trial in Belgrade for the murder of Croatian journalist Ivo Pukanic and his business partner Niko Franjic.

Ostojic said that the investigation into death threats against former Deputy Speaker of Parliament Vladimir Seks was not over yet and that he did not know when it would be.

He said that the new Police Bill had passed the necessary procedure before being sent to the government for approval and was now being considered by the European Commission.
