Croatian households spend EUR 253 on groceries per month

ZAGREB, March 18 (Hina) - Croatian households spend about HRK 1,900 a month on average for food, drink and other groceries, according to a survey which the GfK agency conducted among 917 citizens last December.

The amounts are highest in the southern region of Dalmatia and in Zagreb, and lowest in northern Croatia and the eastern region of Slavonia.

Only 20 per cent of households spend above average, mainly between HRK 2,000-3,000.

Hypermarkets are the most popular for grocery shopping, followed by supermarkets, while small businesses are the least popular.

The main reasons why people spend most money in a certain store is proximity to home or work, product range and affordable prices.

Seventy-three per cent of customers pay cash and the rest by plastic card. Of the latter, two-thirds use debit cards, 15 per cent use credit cards, while the rest combine.

More than 70 per cent of consumers use loyalty cards.
