UNPROFOR PRESS RELEASE

ZAGREB, Nov 11 (Hina) - UNPROFOR Head of Civil Affairs Cedric Thornberry visited Wednesday Pakrac and Okucani because of reports of deteriorating stability in Sector West, said yesterday's press release by the UNPROFOR Office in Zagreb. "He also visited UN observation posts on the eastern side of the confrontation line, where Croatian Special Police entered the Sector on 21 October armed with anti-tank weapons, machine-guns, rifles and grenades," the press release further said. According to the release, Thornberry observed "rotation exercises of the Special Police near Sirinci and Masickion the UNPA border" and he noted that the both sides involved in the conflict have heavy weaponry and soldiers carrying "long arms" in the areas specified as demilitarized zones in Security Council Resolution 743. "Meeting a Serb delegation headed by Mr Vitez in Okucani at noon, and later with a Croatian delegation headed by Mr Vladimir Delac in Pakrac, Mr Thornberry reminded both parties that their re-militarization was in clear violation of Security Council Resolution 743," said the press release adding that Thornberry cautioned that cooperation with the UN is a lot better for everybody than a return to war. "On 11 November, Mr Thornberry, together with the Force Commander, Gen. Jean Cot, will meet with Croatian Minister of the Interior, Mr Ivan Jarnjak, to discuss further the growth of tension in Sector West," said the press release. 111203 MET nov 93
