ZAGREB, Nov 3 (Hina) - The chairman of the Croatian Helsinki
Committee, Ivan Cicak, held the closing speech at a Zagreb panel on
legal, moral and social aspects of evictions from former YU-army
flats.
Quoting Pope John Paul's words that "no one will be able to
say they had not known," Cicak reminded the present representatives
of Croatian authorities that they would not be able to plead
ignorance.
"It is now a matter of political will whether this knowledge
will be applied in law-making and in practice," Cicak said.
He said the Croatian Helsinki Committee was prepared to send
representatives to the debate on evictions at the next session of
the House of Representatives.
The panel was organised by the Croatian Helsinki Committee and
the Croatian Legal Support Centre.
The sixty-strong attendance included foreign diplomats and
Croatian government officials.
