A BRIEF LOOK AT CROATIAN PRESS ON THURSDAY

ZAGREB, Oct 6 (Hina) - "Sharp Protest to Slovenia" was the bold front-page headline in the Zagreb daily VJESNIK which ran Croatian Foreign Minister Granic's note to the Slovene Ambassador in Zagreb. The Croatian Parliament's House of Representative declaration condemning the Slovene Parliament's unilateral move was also published. The declaration was prompted by the Slovene Parliament's passing of a Municipalities Act under which four Croatian villages in Istria would be treated as part of Slovene territory. VJESNIK also included a map on the area(s) in question on page three. VJESNIK journalist, Aleksa Crnjakovic, wrote about shifts in relations between the Croatian Parliament and Government emphasizing that in future it would not be enough for Prime Minister Nikica Valentic to say "I assure You" - he would also have substantiate his claims. VJESNIK columnist Stjepan Cuic, in a piece titled "Diary from Vukovar" says that the problem of evictions could not be resolved fairly or technically unless it was traced back to Vukovar. When Serb aggressors occupied Vukovar violations of human and nationality rights started with mass evictions, Cuic said. The other Zagreb-based daily VECERNJI LIST also led its front page with the headline "Sharp Protest To Slovenia". It also carried the Croatian Parliament's declaration on the Slovene Parliament's Municipalities Act describing it as a "unilateral move to annex Croatian territory to Slovenia and as null and void". Croatian National Bank governor Pero Jurkovic confirmed Croatia's readiness to accept all obligations from the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) main document, according to a VECERNJI LIST report on the annual IMF and World Bank conference.
