UNPROFOR INSISTS ON WITHDRAWAL OF BOSNIAN ARMY FROM MOUNT IGMAN

SARAJEVO, Oct 8 (Hina) - A spokesman for UNPROFOR, Herve Gourmelon, today said that 521 Bosnian Army soldiers had withdrawn from the Igman Mount demilitarized zone by 7 a.m. Saturday. French peacekeepers were controlling the withdrawal of the Bosnian troops and destroying their trenches and bunkers, Gourmelon told journalists in Sarajevo. He also said that some Bosnian soldiers had refused on Friday to leave the demilitarized zone, and UNPROFOR had to comb the area in order to be sure that no Bosnian troops remained in the woods. President of B-H Presidency Alija Izetbegovic yesterday said that no demilitarized zone had been established in that part of Mount Igman, but only a UN-controlled line of disengagement had been set between the Bosnian army and the Serb forces. Izetbegovic said the withdrawal of the Bosnian Army soldiers from Mounts Igman and Bjelasnica had not been carried out because of the UNPROFOR pressure but for "military reasons". The Sarajevo-based daily OSLOBODJENJE today carried the copy of the agreement signed by Stjepan Siber on behalf of the Bosnian Army and Manojlo Milovanovic on behalf of the Bosnian Serb forces on 14 August 1993. The agreement consists of three provisions, and the first of them determines the disengagement line. The next provision refers to the withdrawal of the Serb forces to the positions they occupied before the offensive on Bjelasnica they launched on 30 July 1993. The last provision reads that the Bosnian Army troops should not advance from their positions to take over the areas previously left by the Serb forces. Commenting on the fact that no demilitarized zone and no ban on the Bosnia Army soldiers' presence in the zone are mentioned in the agreement UN spokeswoman Claire Grimes today said it was true that such conditions were not explicitly written, but the spirit of the agreement supposed them. A press release from UN special envoy Yasushi Akashi's office last night insisted on the Bosnian Army's withdrawal from Mounts Igman and Bjelasnica on the ground of the 14 August 1993 agreement. The situation in Sarajevo was still tense after Bosnian army commandos raided a Bosnian Serb command post and neutralized it two days ago, UN sources said. (hina) jas mm 081703 MET oct 94
