TUDJMAN RECEIVES LORD OWEN AND STOLTENBERG

$ NBERG ZAGREB, Sep 7, (Hina)- The President of Croatia, Franjo Tudjman, received in Zagreb last night, peace mediators for the former Yugoslavia, Lord David Owen and Thorvald Stoltenberg. Lord Owen said after the meeting that he and President Tudjman discussed the entire situation and how it would reflect on Croatia. Asked by journalists to elaborate, Lord Owen said the UNPROFOR mandate was of the major themes of the discussion with President Tudjman. They had also discussed economic issues such as water supplies and opening the oil pipeline and roads. Also discussed were the effects on Croatia of the eventual withdrawal of UN troops from Bosnia-Hercegovina, Lord Owen said. He also gave his impressions of a recent meeting with the presidents of Sebia and Montenegro, Milosevic and Bulatovic. He was hopeful of talks on economic questions between the Croatian Government and Serbs living in UNPA territory. Stoltenberg said it was very difficult, if not downright impossible, to discuss economic questions without considering political issues because the two matters were closely linked. Stoltenberg repeated that UN peace troops were here to help people but that they would leave if Croatia rejected to their presence. Lord Owen said UN troops were still needed in Bosnia- Hercegovina, not just because of the Bosnian Serbs, but also to boost the Croat-Moslem relationship. The peace mediators were to have visited Knin yesterday, but because of difficulties, the visit was postponed for Wednesday. Also present during the talks between the peace mediators and President Tudjman were: Vice President and Minister Foreign Affairs Minister, Granic, Defence Minister Susak, chief of the Office of National Security, Sarinic, the President's adviser on internal affairs, Pasalic and the deputy head of the President's office, Jaksic.
