ZAGREB, May 24 (Hina) - "Today, heavy fighting again broke out in
Sarajevo in violation of the Safe Area and the Exclusion Zone
regimes, endangering the lives of innocent civilians, UN soldiers
and civilian personnel," said the UN Secretary General's special
envoy Yasushi Akashi, in a statement released today.
"Weapons have been removed from the Weapons Collection Points
or, in some instances, fired from them. This makes a series of
extremely dangerous and volatile UN escalations that cannot be
tolerated," Akashi said.
"In conjunction with the Force Commander, Lieutenant-General
Bertrand Janvier, the Commander UNPROFOR, Lieutenant-General Rupert
Smith, I demand a prompt cease fire and full compliance with the
February 1994 agreement on heavy weapons. I remind the Bosnian Serb
party as well as the Government of Bosnia-Herzegovina of the
potentially serious consequences of non-compliance; the gravity of
the current situation should not be underestimated," Akashi said.
