ZAGREB, May 17 (Hina) - A solemn celebration was held today in the
palace of the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences (HAZU) to mark
the 50th anniversary of the anti-Fascist victory.
On behalf of the Croatian President Franjo Tudjman his special
envoy, Andjelko Mijatovic, addressed the gathered guests and
members of the Academy.
Professor Ivan Supek, the HAZU head, said the 50th anniversary
of the anti-Fascist victory might be marked both by pride and
bitterness, and above all in the shadow of even "more horrible
repeated aggression against Croatia and the question how we can
celebrate this anniversary."
"We are proud that the Republic of Croatia was born in the
struggle against Fascist conquerors, thus aligning itself with the
anti-Fascist coalition. However, at the same time we recollect
bitterly that after the liberating struggle the Bolshevik
Yugoslavia ensued," Supek added.
Emphasizing that "Bolshevism and the movement of 'Ustashas'
belonged to the lumber room of history," Supek said that "Croatia
is now reconciled while facing the joint enemy - Serb nationalistic
Bolshevism."
