ZAGREB, March 8 (Hina) - Croatian scientists will continue to
observe the development of tropic algae "Caulerpa Taxifolia" in the
two locations of Croatia's Adriatic sea where it has appeared, the
Croatian state administration for the protection of environment
said in a statement today.
The decision was made at yesterday's meeting of
representatives from the Split-based Oceanography Institute, the
Rovinj-based "Ruder Boskovic" insitute for sea research, Croatian
Maritime Ministry, Tourism Ministry and Science and Technology
Ministry.
The statement says that the algae "Caulerpa Taxifolia" has
been existing in the Mediterranean sea for more then ten years and
that scientists has systematically observed its development in the
parts of Mediterranean in France, Italy and Spain where it has been
found so far. There the algae behaves more like weed obstructing
the development of existing natural sea communities and exchanging
their structure.
Croatian scientists exchanged information about the algae with
scientists of the countries where the algae has already appeared.
Zagreb-based daily "Vecernji List" today wrote that the tropic
algae was discovered last summer near Stari Grad on the island of
Hvar, but it was also spotted in Malinska on the island of Krk.
