SERBS OPPOSE OPENING OF TUZLA AIRPORT

SARAJEVO, Feb 1 (Hina) - Bosnian Serbs still opposed the opening of the Tuzla airport, the UN in Sarajevo said today. The Serbs threatened to take "unpopular measures" if UN forces dispatched their aircraft to Tuzla airport, UN spokesman Alexander Ivanko said. The threat was issued by Karadzic's General Tulimir at yesterday's talks on UNPROFOR's freedom of movement. The Serbs were opposing the opening of the airport because it was situated in an area controlled by the Bosnian army. Ivanko ignored what these "unpopular measures" meant. The UN rejected all such threats but still, one should be realistic and understand that UNPROFOR could not open the Tuzla airport without permission from the Serbs, Ivanko said. The UN in Bosnia had planned to open the Tuzla airport to facilitate the shipping of supplies to and the relief of peace- keepers deployed in north-eastern Bosnia. The Serbs said the opening could only be considered "after the war." (hina) jn as sd 011503 MET feb 95
