SECURITY COUNCIL EXTENDS EASING OF SANCTIONS AGAINST YUGOSLAVIA

NEW YORK, Jan 13 (Hina) - The UN Security Council Thursday night adopted a resolution on the easing of sanctions against Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro) for another 100 days. Resolution 820, adopted with 14 votes in favour and Russia's abstention, confirmed that import, export and transshipment through Serb-held areas in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina would be allowed only with permission from the governments of Croatia and Bosnia- Herzegovina respectively. This would also apply to all transshipments across the Yugoslav-Bosnian border. If the UN secretary general reported that Yugoslav authorities were not complying with their decision on closing the border with Bosnia, the easing of sanctions would be suspended on the fifth day after such a report was submitted. The Croatian ambassador to the UN, Mario Nobilo, told the Security Council session that the Yugoslav border was not completely sealed. Pursuant to paragraph 3 of the resolution, Yugoslavia would no longer be able, without consequences, to send non- humanitarian supplies through Bosnia to Serb-held areas in Croatia, Nobilo said. If Yugoslavia decided to violate paragraph 12 of the resolution, the Council would have no other choice but to re- strengthen sanctions which had earlier been alleviated by resolution 943, Nobilo added. Speaking of the Croatian government decision on ending the UNPROFOR mandate, Nobilo said he hoped the international community would be able to help Croatia in the peaceful reintegration of its occupied territories.
