Friday to a Slovene Foreign Ministry statement regarding works
begun by Croatia to renovate the Plovanija border crossing
facilities. #L#
The Croatian Foreign Ministry described the statement as an
"unnecessary and harmful political and media campaign which is not
conducive to the development of confidence between the two
countries."
The Croatian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that
Croatian diplomats had "notified in advance the Slovene Government
of the scope of these minor construction works" in accordance with
international law. The aim of the works was to improve the working
conditions of border officials, the statement said.
The Croatian Foreign Ministry statement also criticised the
Slovene plans to repair the Mura River embankment against floods.
"The Mura embankment is part of the territory of the Republic
of Croatia and has never been declared as disputable by the Slovene
side," the Croatian Foreign Ministry said.
The problem of protection against floods should be addressed
in line with Croatian laws and in cooperation with Croatian
institutions, and not by buying the land from individual owners,
the statement stressed.
Croatia believed that it would be in the best interests of
both sides to resolve such issues by agreement.
"The Croatian Water Supply Management has already forwarded a
proposal to the Slovene Ministry for Environment and Urban Planning
to resolve the problem through joint investments in line with the
relevant Croatian regulations," the statement said.
The Croatian Foreign Ministry reaffirmed its "willingness to
resolve sensitive or open questions in the spirit of understanding
and trust, without unnecessary political instrumentalisation."
