The equipment includes VOR-DME instruments, intended for route
flights, and an ILS device for instrumental landing, which were
purchased with a loan by the European Bank, amounting to DEM 1,5
million and assets from Croatia's budget amounting to DEM 2
million.
Today's ceremony at Dubrovnik airport was also attended by
Tourism Minister Niko Bulic, Dubrovnik Prefect Jure Buric, the
commander of the Croatian army 4th Officer Corps, Major General
Milivoj Petkovic and other guests.
At a press conference after the ceremony, Minister Luzavec
said that the purchase of the equipment which was put in operation
today represented the completion of a program of the reconstruction
of airports and their equipment with navigation instruments, which
cost USD 22 million, which were secured by the European Bank, and
more than 100 million kunas, secured by the Croatian government.
The money was used for the purchase of the most modern
equipment for a new control tower at Split airport, as well as for
the radar at Mt Kozjak overlooking Split (which covers the whole of
the Adriatic and Bosnia-Herzegovina). A system, similar to the one
in Dubrovnik, was being set up in Pula. The works would be finished
by 15 July and the reconstruction of the tower by 10 July.
The reconstruction of Zadar airport would start in August.
Eleven million German marks had been secured for the reconstruction
which should be completed in May 1997.
Minister Luzavec also announced programs of development of
airports at the islands of Losinj, Hvar and Korcula.
An international seminar on the safety of air traffic in
Europe would be held in Dubrovnik from September 22 to 26, and it
would be followed by a meeting of a European Union working group
for traffic in October, Luzavec said.
