ZAGREB, May 15 (Hina) - Zagreb City Council President, Zdravko
Tomac, on Wednesday said that concrete talks concerning the
solution to the problem of the election of the Zagreb mayor were
possible between representatives of the Seven Party Opposition
Alliance and the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ).
"The situation is such that talks are necessary for the
interest of the country. The Croatian government will prove its
democracy by showing whether it protects legality or not", Tomac
told a press conference of the leaders of the Seven Party
Opposition Alliance held at the Zagreb City Council.#L#
Jozo Rados, Vice-President of the Croatian Social Liberal
Party (HSLS), said that the Croatian government, which must make a
decision concerning the protection of legality, should declare
itself on the legality of the position of the appointed mayor as
soon as possible.
"Are the anti-European tendencies in Croatia so strong that
they are deliberately trying to prevent Croatia's entry into the
Council of Europe?", Rados inquired.
Silvije Degen, acting president of the Social Democratic
Action of Croatia (ASH), agreed with Rados' claim that anti-
European tendencies existed in Croatia.
"A democratic solution to the problem of the election of the
Zagreb mayor should either be in accordance with the results of the
last elections or require new ones, which should take place in a
month", said Ivica Racan, president of the Social Democratic Party
(SDP).
The Zagreb City Council had no influence if the city was ruled
by an illegal executive authority (from the previous City Council),
said Stipe Mesic, president of the Croatian Independent Democrats
(HND).
A postponement of Croatia's admission into the Council of
Europe would distance it from a ten per cent economic growth
announced for this year, said Radimir Cacic, president of the
Croatian Peoples Party (HNS), adding that "if an agreement on the
Zagreb crisis cannot be reached, elections should be organized."
Dobroslav Paraga, president of Croatia's Party of Right (HSP),
said that the government should resign.
