ZAGREB, 1 May (Hina) - The Istrian Democratic Assembly (IDS) on Wednesday issued a statement regarding yesterday's decision of the Croatian Government to dissolve the Zagreb City Assembly. Although formally justifiable, the decision
was 'a total political defeat of the Croatian Democratic Union'. After several months of trying, the HDZ has not managed to win support of any of the Coalition partners of the Zagreb Opposition alliance, so it decided to take drastic measures, the statement said.

The IDS congratulated the Coalition for 'its consistency and
resilience' and expressed hope that the behaviour of the HDZ would
not prevent Croatia's admission to the European integration
processes.
As regards the idea of an advisory referendum, the IDS
recalled that during the last changes of the territorial
organisation of Zagreb, the party demanded that a referendum be
held, 'but the HDZ refused it'.
The IDS expected from the government to 'immediately call new
elections for the representative bodies of the units of local self-
government and to secure 'peaceful and legal transfer of authority
on all levels', said the statement, signed by IDS President Ivan
Jakovcic.
