OSIJEK, 15 April (Hina) - Osijek municipal leaders and Osijek
Jewish community representatives on Monday unveiled a memorial
plaque on the site of the former Osijek synagogue. #L#
The synagogue was built in 1862 and as the most important
religious building in Osijek it spoke of the importance of the
Jewish community in the city, the head of the Osijek Jewish
community Darko Fiser said.
It was burnt in 1941 by unknown persons 'behind whom stood the
dark ideology of fascism'. The burning of the synagogue was a
symbol of 'the sad fate of the Jewish people in World War II',
Fiser said.
Delegations of the municipal leadership and the Jewish
community laid wreaths at the memorial site of Holocaust victims at
Ljudevit Gaj Square.
