SARAJEVO, Apr 8 (Hina) - Bosnian Prime Minister Hasan Muratovic
clarified on Monday in Sarajevo the monetary chaos while commenting
on the economic situation in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Muratovic said the monetary chaos in Sarajevo and some other
towns occurred due to the merchants' rejection to accept the
Bosnia-Herzegovina dinar as the instrument of payment and declared
that "those were speculations meant to buy the dinars from the
population at a rate considerably lower than the official
exchange".
The Prime Minister stated there were no economic reasons for
changing the official exchange rate of 100 dinars for one German
mark, and that the confusion had arisen following the decision of
the federal minister of finance demanding that all payments towards
the Federation be executed in marks. That decision had so far not
been enforced and the BiH National Bank stood firmly behind the
official exchange rate, Muratovic said.
For almost two days Sarajevo stores have not accepted BH
dinars, while street black marketeers were exchanging 180 dinars
for one German mark. Merchants said they were forced to do so as
neither the Money Transfers Bureau would accept dinars.
