ZAGREB, Jan 2 (Hina) - Senior Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party officials said on Tuesday no inter-party agreement on the setup of the Zagreb city and county assemblies had been reached. The City Assembly held a repeated
constituent session on Tuesday in line with a government decision of December 4 last year. Although no agreement was reached, all HDZ councilors attended the session because they did not want to take the responsibility for deepening the crisis, the party officials told a news conference in Zagreb. The HDZ councilors did not attend the first constituent session on December 2, and the government declared the session null and void because the necessary two-thirds majority of the councilors had failed to attend.

"We have had consecutive talks on the setup of the assemblies,
particularly on the posts of mayor and speaker. But the
negotiations failed because the representatives of the opposition
rejected all our proposals," the HDZ's general secretary Ivan
Valent said.
"The opposition showed no will for compromise," he added.
HDZ vice-president Ivic Pasalic said that the HDZ's decision
to take part in the forming of government in the capital dismissed
the possibility of appointing a government commissioner for Zagreb.
