TRIAL OF OPEN SOCIETY INSTITUTE EMPLOYEES CONTINUES ( Editorial: --> 1770 )

( Editorial: --> 1770 ) ZAGREB, 18 Nov (Hina) - The trial of the executive director of the Open Society Institute - Croatia, Karmen Basic, and the Institute's business director Srdjan Dvornik and accountant Ivanka Marton, all charged with keeping dual payrolls and not paying taxes for a part of the salaries, continued before the Zagreb Municipal Court Tuesday. Auditor Ivan Tkalec testified before the court saying that he had checked the Institute's list of monthly payments and found examples where one part of the salary was paid in kuna, with all taxes paid. The other part of the salary was paid in US dollars with no taxes paid. Those payments could be proved only by cash payment certificates, but without evidence of tax deductions, Tkalec said. The defence objected to the findings of the auditor, saying it had not been taken into account that the Institute was an office of a foreign legal entity engaged in humanitarian activities. The trial will continue tomorrow. (hina) rm 181820 MET nov 97
