Elections were an important sign-post for the future of the
Dayton Agreement and it was in the interest of all parties to take
part in them, Solana told a news conference held at the end of his
visit to Sarajevo on Friday.
On the eve of the elections, additional six battalions of NATO
soldiers had arrived in Bosnia-Herzegovina and there were 40,000
troops in the field at the moment. They had the authority and means
to provide complete security for the voters, and prevent any
incidents, which they would do, Solana said.
He stressed that the NATO Council had given General Clark
every authority to undertake any necessary action with the aim of
preventing the media which acted against the spirit and letter of
the Dayton Agreement.
General Clark confirmed that "Commando Solo" special aircraft
which had arrived at the NATO base in Italy's Brindisi on Thursday
would, if necessary, be used in actions against inflammatory media,
and he especially mentioned the Pale-based radio and television.
