SPLIT, Aug 13 (Hina) - Placido Domingo, one of the most famous tenors in
the world, gave a magnificent concert before the enthusiastic audience in
the Croatian coastal city of Split on Tuesday evening, The concert will be
remembered by Split's citizens as a unique cultural event in their city.
In the overcrowded square of Prokurative, where 4500 spectators
gathered, this Spanish opera singer performed works of Massenet, Verdi,
Gounod and Lehar and sang several airs with an outstanding Bulgarian
soprano, Svetla Vassileva, and a Croatian bass, Boris Martinovic. The Split-
based Croatian National Theatre (HNK) choir and orchestra, and a world-
known Croatian conductor, Vjekoslav Sutej, took part in the concert.
At the end of the concert, Placido, being inspired by the
enthusiastic audience, sang the famous "Granada" and then a few
Dalmatian folk tunes.
About 30,000 citizens watched the concert on two huge
screens set up on Split's waterfront.
Many Croatian high-ranking officials, including ministers
Granic and Radic and a vice premier Skegro, other politicians, religious
dignitaries and public figures attended the concert in Split.
