Zdravko Tomac, a politician and a full professor at Faculty of
Political Science of University of Zagreb, was born on May 24, 1937, in
Garcin near the eastern Croatian town of Slavonski Brod. He graduated
from a grammar school in Slavonski Brod, graduated from Faculty of
Economics of University of Zagreb, and earned a PhD from Faculty of
Political Science in 1976. He is married. Wife: Ankica. Children: a son.
He worked in Slavonski Brod from 1960 to 1965. Then he moved to
Zagreb where he used to work in the head committee of the Socialist
Association of Working People until 1971. He worked as an advisor in the
Parliament and Presidency of the Socialist Republic of Croatia until
1974. He has been employed with Faculty of Political Science in Zagreb
since 1983.
Since 1989 he has been in the highest leadership of the Social
Democratic Party (SDP). In 1992 he was a vice premier of the Government
of Democratic Unity of Croatia. In 1993 he was elected to be a member of
the House of Counties of the Croatian Parliament. In 1995, he was
elected to be a member of the House of Representatives of the Croatian
Parliament. From 1996 until local elections in 1997 he was the president
of Zagreb's city council.
He has written many books, essays and scientific works.
