The welcome lasted longer than planned and President Tudjman gave
another short speech, stressing that today's visit to Vukovar was very
important for the peaceful reintegration of the Croatian Danube river
region. All that Croatia achieved, it achieved with the help of national
unity and relying on its own strength.
On its way back to Zagreb, the Peace Train stopped in Vinkovci and
Slavonski Brod, where it was greeted by numerous citizens.
While leaving Vukovar, the train was attacked by a group of local
Serb extremists who threw stones at it, damaging one window.
The Peace Train and it all stood for "will not be stopped by a
group of malcontents who failed to realise their dream of Greater Serbia
and now think that they can stop the course of history with stones,"
Parliament Vice President Vladimir Seks told some 10,000 Vinkovci
residents who gathered at the railway station to welcome the Peace Train
and President Tudjman.
