ZAGREB, Jan 24 (Hina) - The Croatian government on Friday sent to
parliament for urgent consideration a bill aimed at improving the
financial position of pensioners.
The bill provides for bringing the 1995 and 1996 pensions
into accord with the salaries of all employees. The difference
would be paid out as of March 1 according to a schedule to be set
by pension funds, not later than within 18 months.
According to the bill, as of February 1, 1997 the pensions
would follow the cost of living.
Although stipulated by the existing law, the pensions so far
have not been harmonized with the salaries of all employees because
of the war and the general economic situation.
The amount of funds necessary for the payment of differences
from February 1, 1995 to December 31, 1996, calculated on the basis
of average pension, is estimated at 300 million kuna ($55 million).
