MOSTAR, Dec 9 (Hina) - A NATO-led Stabilisation Force (SFOR)
security operation in southern Bosnia was discontinued but could,
according to an SFOR spokesman, be resumed if necessary.
The operation in the Mostar, Stolac, and Capljina area included
strict control of movement and vehicle inspection.
In the past two weeks, it was a source of tension between the SFOR
and the local population, especially in the Stolac area, where ten
days ago trucks and buses blocked traffic.
The 12-hour blockade came in the wake of SFOR's arrest of a Croat who
was found with a gun and ammunition.
The discontinuation in the strict vehicle inspection should
contribute to alleviating the unrest of law-abiding citizens,
Francois Grandeau, spokesman for SFOR's multinational division for
the southeast sector in Bosnia, said on Wednesday.
He added SFOR's alertness and the monitoring of people acting
against the low would not suffer as a result of the inspection
cessation.
The spokesman pointed out the SFOR would, in line with its
authority, support the return of Croats to Bijelo Polje, a Mostar
district, announced for Thursday.
