ZAGREB, Nov 15 (Hina) - The gas leak which occurred on November 14 at
a rig near the Hungarian town of Nagylengyela is not threatening
Croatia thanks to favourable weather conditions.
This was said in a statement released on Sunday afternoon by the
State Administration for Environmental Protection, Weather
Service and the Institute for Toxicology.
The statement was released after a meeting held by Croatian experts
who discussed the actual situation and possible danger for
Croatia.
The leak occurred thirty minutes after midnight on Saturday, in
Nagylengyel, some 30 km north of Nagykanisza, due to a failure on a
valve. The gas has since been continually leaking out, forming a
cloud.
Having analysed the available data, experts have estimated that the
north-east wind in the region will carry the cloud towards eastern
parts of Hungary. The Hungarian authorities have evacuated
residents from the area close to the gas rig.
The poisonous cloud contains mainly hydrogen sulphide and carbon
oxide. Hydrogen sulphide can be dangerous if its concentration in
the air exceeds certain levels.
Authorised institutions have set up instruments at the state border
to measure the level of hydrogen sulphide in the air and are in
permanent contact with the authorised services in Croatia.
