KRISTALLNACHT
NEW YORK, Nov 10 (Hina) - Zagreb's choir "Lira" (The Lyre) on Monday
night held a concert at the world's largest reformist synagogue -
New York's Temple Emanu-El.
The concert was held to mark the 60th anniversary of Kristallnacht
(The Nigh of Broken Glass) - the beginning of the Nazi pogrom
against German Jews.
Sixty years ago - on November 9, 1938 - Adolf Hitler ordered the
eradication of any trace of Jewish culture and tradition throughout
the country.
The beginning of the suffering of the Jews is recorded in history
under the name Kristallnacht - the night when synagogues and books
of Jewish authors were set afire throughout Germany.
Last night's performance was Lira's second visit to New York.
The choir first visited New York ten years ago, when it held a
concert in the Park East synagogue to mark the 50th anniversary of
Kristallnacht.
The programme of yesterday's concert included songs by Jewish
composers as well as those by other authors (including Croatian)
with Jewish topics.
