WREATHS LAID MARKING THE DAY OF ANTI-FASCIST STRUGGLE

( Editorial: --> 2862 ) ZAGREB, June 22 (Hina) - A delegation representing the Croatian President Franjo Tudjman on Monday 22 June laid a wreath, marking the Day of Anti-Fascist Struggle, at the Homeland Altar, Medvedgrad, near Zagreb. The delegation included the President Office's Chief-of-Staff Hrvoje Sarinic, Head of the Military Cabinet in the President's Office General Darko Grdic and retired General of the Army Zvonimir Cervenko. "We mark this day as a day when the Croatian people presented their first organised anti-fascist resistance with which Croatia incorporated itself into the line of victor countries at the end of the war and gained the right to its own state. The movement of the anti-fascist struggle in Croatia and then its development into a national movement alone represented an exceptionally significant contribution to the anti-fascist coalition in Europe. To all the victims and killed in the anti-fascist struggle for Croatia we pay honour and express our gratitude," wrote Sarinic in the Book of Impressions. Wreaths were also laid at the Homeland Altar by delegations of the Croatian National Parliament and Government as well as the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ). A delegation of the Alliance of Anti-Fascist Soldiers of Croatia (SAB) laid a wreath in honour of all victims of the People's Liberation War and Anti-Fascist Struggle at the grave of the People's Heroes and the Partisan section of Zagreb's Mirigoj cemetery as well as at the monument to executed Zagrebers in the Dotrscina Remembrance Park. The Day of Anti-Fascist Struggle marks the day in 1941 when the anti-fascist unit was organised in Croatia, the first in Europe. (hina) jn bag 221356 MET jun 98
